Derek Jeter gave an opening speech at University of Michigan We talked about the importance of fighting through Saturday and failure.
New York Yankees The legend would have played baseball in Michigan, the state he called Kalamazoo home if he didn’t immediately turn the pro as his first round pick in 1992.
With an honorary degree from Michigan, Jeter spoke to hundreds of graduate students and used her mistakes in messaging her class.

“Failure is essential,” he said. “If you can certainly promise one thing, you will fail. Your dreams will be bigger and your risk will be greater. But if you don’t take risks, you may be overmatched if you don’t commit to your dreams.
When Jeter decided to go pro, it wasn’t smooth sailing in the minor leagues.
“I have failed publicly, I have failed miserably. I have literally cried because I am so bad. My days have literally cried. First season as a promade 56 errors. For non-baseball fans, the crowd chuckled, so Jeter said.
Jeter’s battle with adversity worked well in the long run.

He arrived in the Big League in 1995, and the rest is history. Jeter put together his Hall of Fame career while becoming perhaps one of the most skilled players in American sports’ most renowned franchises.
But if he lets him define someone in the diamond fail, he would not have gotten there.
It’s a message he prepared for Michigan students for professional life.

“You, me, we all have to learn to deal with failure,” Jeter said. “You wouldn’t have succeeded without failure. It’s your job to ensure that speed bumps don’t become obstacles.”
