Tax negotiations continue
After Trump first announced foreign round-trip tariffs in April, the 90-day suspension on tariffs was scheduled to end on July 9th. Trump told reporters from New Jersey on Sunday that his administration will begin sending letters to other countries on Monday.
“I’m 12 years old, maybe 15 letters,” Trump told reporters on Sunday. “And we also did the trade, so there’s a combination of letters and some transactions.”
If the country does not trade by August 1st, tariffs will return to April levels, Bescent says.
Ongoing tariff negotiations will sign the law on Friday following Congress passing Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” that will promote the president’s agenda on taxes, immigration, energy, defense and government bonds.
Treasury Secretary Scott Becent joined Fox News’ Shannon Breem Sunday to explain the new deadline for August 1, warning that tariffs will return to April levels if foreign countries do not enter into trade agreements by the beginning of August.
“Can I say some of these trading partners have a little pause at the July 9 deadline?” asked Bream.
“I don’t think it’s a bit of a pause to wonder what happened. As part of the trading team, the great thing about President Trump being on our side is that he created the maximum leverage,” replied Bescent.
“I think we’re going to keep things moving over the next few days and weeks by telling our trading partners that the boomerang can return to the date on April 2nd,” he added.
