“For too long, misguided policies have prioritized political correctness for American security,” Duffy said.
Under federal law, drivers must “read and speak English thoroughly to speak to the public, understand highway traffic signs and signals in English, respond to official inquiries, and create entries in reports and records.”
The move comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on April 28th. Ministry of Transport Include English literacy tests for truck drivers.

“You may not know, but there are many communication issues between truck drivers on the road between federal officials and local officials. This is clearly a public safety risk.” “So, we ensure that truck drivers, the backbone of our economy, can all speak English. That’s a very common sense policy.”
Before 2015 there were over 99,000 drivers. English proficiency level Violation and a thousand people were not served, Duffy said.
Many of these drivers were given a “slap on the wrist,” he said.
“English is the language of opportunity in America,” the secretary said. “To ensure that drivers who cannot read stop signs or officers directed to operate a large 80,000 pound rig is a threat to the safety of all Americans on our roads.”
