Truckie School spokesman Amber Burke told the newspaper that the move was made because high schools need to comply with California laws regarding sex discrimination.
“We are a California school district, so we must comply with California law,” Burke said. “This relates to recent changes to NIAA policies regarding eligibility for student-athletes based on biological sex, which is inconsistent with California law.”
The Truckee Tahoe United School District wrote to its parents, saying that Nevada’s rules “are directly at odds with California law, including AB 1955, which guarantees students’ rights to privacy and protects against discrimination.”
The NIAA voted in April to adopt a new gender eligibility policy that bans trans athletes from women’s sports. Only biological women can compete with state girls.
The change marks a reversal from the state’s previous policies that allowed trans-athletes to compete in girls and women’s sports.
