
Tommy Helms was twice MLB All-Star, and the 1966 National League Rookie of the Year passed away. Cincinnati Reds It was announced on Sunday. He was 83 years old.
Helms made his debut for the Reds in 1964, but did not play full time until 1966. He spent eight years in Cincinnati, including the Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox Before he left the majors following the 1977 season.

“We are sad to hear that Tommy Helms, the second baseman of the Reds Hall of Fame, has passed,” the team announced. “Our thoughts and prayers are directed at his family and friends.”
Both Helms’ All-Star seasons came when he was with the Reds.
In 1967 he hit .275 with 136 hits in 497 at-bats and drove for 35 runs. He also had four triples, which was his career best at the time. Helms followed with a .288 batting average, 47 RBI and a double of 28 times. He won the MVP vote in 1968.

Helms won the Gold Glove as his second baseman before joining the Astros in 1970 and 1971.
Helms hit .269 with 34 home runs, 477 RBIs and 223 doubles in 14 seasons. With his post-career, he managed the Reds easily in the 1988 and 1989 seasons. He was 28-26 in these two partial seasons.
He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 1979.

Tommy’s nephew Wes Helms played 13 seasons in the big leagues. He appeared in the Florida Marlins. Atlanta Bravesthe Milwaukee Brewers and the Philadelphia Phillies.
