Tom Hanks Her only daughter, Ee Hanks, remembers her parents’ divorce and her complicated childhood, damaged by her mother who claims she could become “violent” emotionally and physically.
EA, whose initials represent Elizabeth Anne, writes about her experiences in the upcoming memoir, “The 10: A Memoir of The Open Road.” The 42-year-old parents split after five years of marriage in 1985, and her mother, Susan Dillingham, describes Hanks’ first “unfamous” wife.
“Big” actor saw EA and her brother Colin Hanks47, on weekends and summer, she wrote in excerpts obtained by People Magazine.
EA said she was born in the Los Angeles area, but her mother moved to Sacramento after separation.

“Eventually my divorce agreement was resolved and I visited my father and stepmother (and soon my younger half-siblings) over the weekend and summer, but I was a Sacramento girl full of confusion, violence, deprivation and love in the year 5-14,” she wrote. “I lived in a White House with a pillar, a backyard with a pool, and a bedroom with pictures of horses on every wall.”
She said Dillingham, who also went on stage with the stage name Samantha Lewis, failed to tell her father that she was leaving LA with her child.
“My dad started picking us up from school, and we’re not there,” EA explained. “And we’ve been there for two weeks and he has to follow us.”
In Sacramento, Colin’s life with Yi and Dillingham was in trouble.
“As the years passed, the backyard was full of dogs — you couldn’t walk around it, the smoke house smoked,” she wrote.
“The fridge was either exposed or full of expired food, but my mother spent more and more time contemplating the Bible and more in a big four-poster bed.”

Hanks then suddenly gained major custody after the incident.
“One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and then I moved to Los Angeles, where I slammed the right in the middle of seventh grade,” she wrote. “My custody arrangements have basically switched. Now I live in Los Angeles and have visited Sacramento on weekends and summer.”
EA added that in her junior year of high school, her mother was “called to say she was dying.”

Dillingham died in 2002 at the age of 49 from lung cancer.
This memoir focuses primarily on a road trip that I took in 2019 to Palatka, Florida. There, Dillingham’s family lived to learn more about their mother. It was inspired by another road trip she and her mom had done together.
“When I was 14, my mother and I drove through America along Interstate 10 along Florida, along asphalt, timbered Winnebago with rolling roaming that felt sailingly along the asphalt,” she wrote about one of Dillingham’s last memories.
She said it was Colin and high school graduation that she remembers her parents being “in the same place at the same time.”
