Ted Danson He looks back at walking away from his iconic character and “cheers.”
During a recent episode of his podcast, “Where everyone knows your name,“The 77-year-old actor was asked by his guest Charlie Day if he ever worried about being typecast as an actor after playing such an iconic character for a long time.
“In the beginning, I blew my life so badly, and I was dealing with myself and my personal, so I blew my personal life so badly,” Danson said.
When asked if the work he was doing himself in his personal life contributed to his decision to leave the show, Danson explained that he “did I do it, ‘I’m blowing in my life for a better person’ so I think he chose to leave.

Danson starred My beloved sitcom From 1982 to 1993, he became one of the few cast members who appeared in all 273 episodes of the show. “Cheers” ended after 11 seasons when Danson expressed his desire to pursue other acting opportunities.
“I was changing for the better and I was really working hard on it, so I thought, ‘I might jump off the cliff completely’,” he explained. “and [there was] A little… if I don’t leave now, I might not know if I can do anything else and I’d like to see if I can do anything else. ”
In terms of getting typecasts, Danson shared that he believes it is “in your hands.” There are always times when critics and people don’t want you “something other than a particular character” he says, “If you don’t pay attention to it,” the problem is easily avoided.
When it was time to leave Sam Malone, Danson admitted that it wasn’t that difficult for some of the other characters he portrayed on screen.

Following his time on the show, Danson appeared in many films and later starred as the lead in another successful sitcom, “Becker.” This began playing a fictional version of “Curb Your Everism” in 2000 between 1998 and 2004.
More recently, Danson starred in the comedy The Good Place as a demon named Michael. It was nominated for him for three Emmy Awards and is currently starring as Charles on Netflix.”Inner man“This is based on a real-life story recorded in the 2020 documentary “The Mole Agent.” ”

He continued, “We can explore aging. In this country, sometimes we are afraid to talk about memory loss, everything.
Danson went on to say that the role is special to him. Because at 76 he is “becoming part of this conversation and becoming more and more my conversation in life.”
The role won him Golden Gloves Nominations in 2025, he won the coveted Carol Barnett Award at the show.
