Boston Red Sox Outfielder Jarlen Duran has shown his speed multiple times in his young MLB career, but there’s nothing like Saturday night against the Cleveland Guardians.
He didn’t do what the Red Sox players did 16 years later. In fact, it was on the exact same date that Jacoby Elsbury did it to the New York Yankees.
Duran was stealing something beautiful Guardian Pitcher Dagnikersey in Boston’s 7-3 victory in the second game of Saturday night’s doubleheader in Cleveland.

The speedster was dancing from 3 base, but left-handed Nikazie couldn’t really see how far Duran was, as his back was facing his bag.
Duran made the most of getting off the base, but basically as he was running along the way he bowed his head and started going home. Nikhazy quickly lifted his foot and fired the pitch, but catcher Bo Naylor couldn’t beat the tag before Duran’s right hand crossed the home plate.
“I heard (3 base coach Kyle Hudson) tell the referee that he was working from the stretch, so I decided to go on the first pitch,” Duran said when asked why he was stolen by the house. “It was just about continuing to attack and causing a bit of confusion. I knew I had it.”
Red Sox star Jarren Duran opens about trying to take his life: “I didn’t want to be here anymore.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora added, “Under the new rules, he’s like the perfect player. We looked at the window there and he took advantage of the situation.”
One new rule that Cora mentions here is that catchers are not allowed to block plates with their own bodies.
It wasn’t the first time Duran tried to do this. Last season alone, he tried twice against one Tampa Bay Rays On May 21st, the other person was against the Chicago White Sox on June 7th.

He scored on both attempts, but they were also double steel. This means another Red Sox player swipes second and gets back home.
But this was a straight stolen house, and Rafael Devers, who was in the batter’s box at the time, would jump up and down when the home plate judge was called Duran Safe.
“It was a really cool play and a cool sequence of events there,” said pitcher Walker Buhler. “He’s one of the most exciting players in baseball. It was fun seeing him close this season after seeing him from afar.”
Even Guardians manager Stephen Voight realized that his third baseman, Jose Ramirez, was not near the third base to get Duran closer, he had to tilt his cap to Duran.
Nikazi may have fired the ball’s house rather than getting off the rubber and experiencing his normal delivery from the stretch.

“He made a big jump, but he took off quickly,” Nikazi said. “At this point, I decided to make a pitch rather than stepping on it. Finally, when I saw him, I should have gotten off.”
Duran, the first All-Star at 25 last season, enjoys a solid start to his 2025 campaign. He has cut .256/.316/.388 with over 28 games so far.
