OpenAI announced Friday that it will begin rolling out advertising on ChatGPT to some U.S. users as it aims to generate more revenue ahead of its long-awaited initial public offering.
The company said it will begin testing ads in the U.S. in the coming weeks for users of its free and low-cost Go tiers, but Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions will not include ads.
“We plan to test ads at the bottom Answers in ChatGPT Based on current conversations, if there are relevant sponsored products or services,” OpenAI said in a statement.

The company said ads will be “clearly labeled” and separated from ChatGPT answers, adding that users will know why certain ads are being shown and be able to close them.
Ads will not appear on accounts where users are under 18, and ads will not appear near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health or politics, the company said.
OpenAI said its ads do not affect the answers ChatGPT gives users and conversations will be maintained. Hidden from advertisers.
“We will never sell your data to advertisers,” the company said, adding that users can turn off personalization features. “We will always offer ways to avoid ads on ChatGPT, including paid ad-free tiers.”

OpenAI relies on subscriptions for most of its revenue, but could generate significant ad revenue from ChatGPT estimates 800 million weekly active users. According to Reuters, the company plans to spend more than $1 trillion on artificial intelligence infrastructure by 2030, but has not said how it will pay for it.
Users can choose to switch to a competing chatbot, eMarketer analyst Jeremy Goldman told Reuters, adding that OpenAI’s move could incentivize competitors, particularly those that position themselves as “ad-free by design,” to clarify their monetization philosophies.
