OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declares a ‘Code Red’ initiative to improve quality internally ChatGPT, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing an internal memo.

Altman’s reported company-wide memo comes as competitors are narrowing OpenAI’s lead in the AI race, with Google last month releasing a new version of its Gemini model that outperformed OpenAI in industry benchmark tests.
In order to focus on its “Code Red” efforts to improve ChatGPT, OpenAI will postpone work on other initiatives, including a personal assistant called Pulse, advertising and AI agents for health and shopping, Altman said in the memo, according to the publication.

Altman also said there will be daily conference calls between officials responsible for strengthening ChatGPT, the paper added.
“Our focus now is to further enhance ChatGPT’s capabilities, making it more intuitive and personal as we continue to grow and expand access around the world,” Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, wrote on X on Monday night.

The paper also cited Google as saying Gemini’s monthly active users rose from 450 million in July to 650 million in October following the release of the image generation tool. OpenAI added that it is also facing pressure from Anthropic, a San Francisco-based company best known for developing the Claude family of chatbots.
OpenAI reportedly has a weekly user base of over 800 million people.
The magazine reported that Altman said in the memo that OpenAI plans to release a new inference model next week that is a precursor to Google’s latest Gemini model.

People familiar with the matter told the newspaper that the company uses a color code of yellow, orange and red to indicate the level of urgency needed to address an issue.
