Japanese car manufacturer Nissan As part of its recovery plan, Re-Nissan, it has increased its planned job cuts by 11,000.
The company currently plans to cut a total of 20,000 positions by 2027.
The company described fiscal year (FY) 2024 as a “challenging” period, saying that “increased variable costs worsened by uncertain environments” forced them to consider further reductions. According to a press release, Nissan aims to save approximately $3.4 billion (500 billion yen) compared to 2024 compared to 2024. This includes not only job openings, but also reducing the number of Nissan plants from 17 to 10 by 2027.

Nissan initially announced in November 2024 that it would cut 9,000 jobs worldwide. Furthermore, as Nissan’s then president and CEO, Uchida immediately volunteered to confiscate half of the monthly compensation, while other executive committee members also volunteered to cut their pay. Uchida resigned in April 2025 after a proposal was made to merge with Nissan and Honda.
In 2024, Nissan reported selling 33.46 million units worldwide, showing a net loss of over $4.5 billion (6700 billion yen). Automakers also experienced a decline in sales around the world, including in China. The company plans to focus on EVS as part of its recovery program.

In Trump’s tariff talk, top automakers can move some production from Mexico, the CEO says
Company outlook for 2025 remains vague to mitigate the president’s impact Donald Trump”customs. For now, the company said it was “prioritizing US-built products, optimizing regional capacity and reallocation of production exposed to tariffs.”
“Given the uncertainty related to [the] Customs environmentoperating income, net income and car-free cash flow guidance for the fiscal year is currently being determined,” Nissan wrote on its website.

The Japanese Prime Minister, who met with Trump in Washington, D.C. in February, said he intends to fight for the removal of US tariffs on Sunday at the Fuji TV Morning Program. According to Reuters. “Trade has been “a gradual controversy,” said Isba, who said the relationship between the US and the country’s Trump was “surprisingly good.”
