The Trump administration sues four people New Jersey The city accused local officials of obstructing federal law and violating efforts to combat illegal immigration through sanctuary city policies.
The Justice Department lawsuit alleges that cities in Newark, Hoboken, Jersey City and Patterson have illegally obstructed federal authorities trying to combat illegal immigration.
Mayor Las Baraka of Newark, Rabbi Bara of Hoboken, Stephen Flop of Jersey City, and Andre Seig of Patterson, along with four city councils, have been appointed defendants.
“The policies challenged by intent and design are head-on attacks on federal immigration laws and the federal authorities that govern them,” the complaint states.

Baraka was recently arrested and charged with trespassing outside his city’s immigration customs facility. The case was dropped, but we Senator Lamonica Mciver He was later charged with assault during a protest at Delaney Hall.
“The lawsuit against Newark is ridiculous,” Barake said in a statement. “We are not in the way of public safety. We support the Constitution, provide oversight, and follow New Jersey laws and guidelines.”
He said there is nothing in city policy that would prevent law enforcement from doing their job. “What we refuse to do is turn our city into a federal immigration enforcement arm. The court has already ruled that it’s not our role,” he added.
Deputy Assistant Director Jaakov Ross wrote that local policies were designed to “stoop federal immigration enforcement.”
Mayor Newark, who was arrested at an ice facility, claims he was “targeted” after a court hearing.
“[E]Where local law enforcement wants to help the US deal with the country’s immigration crisis, challenged policies prevent them from doing so,” he wrote.
The lawsuit comes after federal charges were filed against gubernatorial candidate Baraka due to his role during the May 9 clash involving Democratic politicians in the United States. Immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) Detention Center in Newark.
“Recent events prove that these New Jersey officials are more interested in political showmanship than in their community’s safety,” Attorney General Pamela Bondy said. “As I have made it clear, this Department of Justice has not tolerated local officials in the sanctuary city that are obstructing immigration enforcement. “We continue to do what we’ve always done, protect the rights of all our residents, stand on constitutional basis, and reject politics based on fear that divides rather than strengthening our communities,” Baraka said.

“Hoboken is a community that takes pride in its vibrancy, cultural diversity and inclusion, and we will continue to stand together as a community for something fair and just,” Bala said in a separate statement. “The city of Hoboken will be active in protecting our rights, spending a day in court and defeating the lawlessness of the Trump administration. To be clear, we will not step back.”
“Jersey City is being sued for being a sanctuary city. I think Maga has exhausted the conspiracy theory that week,” Flop wrote to X in response to the lawsuit. “Here’s the truth. Jersey City’s policy protects our families, reflects our values, and recorded crime rates. As governor, I am not bullied. I will fight this and win.”
