Seattle Sounders Goalkeeper Stephen Frey was taken from the field by ambulance during a match with Columbus crew on Sunday after a horrifying collision.
During the 1-1 match, Frey jumped up and played with a free kick. As he came down, his head collided. Crew’s knees. Frey fell to the ground and players around him quickly signaled for help.

Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer was on guard when he left the field. He was being evaluated for head and neck injuries.
“His fingers were moving, so he was fine in that regard. There was no paralysis or any major one, but obviously I don’t want to underestimate it,” Schmetzer said.
Schmetzer and crew coach Willfried Nancy appealed to the referee to stop the game. He praised Nancy for having the official call out to the match, even if Columbus was awarded a corner kick at the final moments.
The goalkeeper wrote on social media Monday that he was back home.

“We’re trying to understand what happened at the end of the game,” Frei writes to X.
“What resonates is all the messages, calls, love I have received from many of you.”
Frey, 39, was born in Switzerland, but moved to the United States as a teenager. He played college football in California.
He has been with the Sounders since 2014 and was on a team that won the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019. He was the 2016 MLS Cup MVP and an All-Star in 2017.
He was with me Toronto FC From 2009 to 2013, before joining Seattle.

The MLS veteran appeared in 425 games, of which he appeared in 424. He played in 343 games for the Sounders. The team said he saved his 1,000th regular season in a match with the crew, with only former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Limand having more on one team of 1,128.
