Miami Marlins First baseman Matt Melvis misunderstood a throw from shortstop Xavier Edwards at the top of five innings in a 6-1 loss to track and field on Friday, and paid it heartily.
Second base player in athletics Lewis Urias hit the ground ball on Edwards. Edwards fired the ball in Melvis’ lack of and dirt.
Mervis tried to pick up the ball from a short hop, but missed it and hit it in a very sensitive area.

In agony, Melvis sat down and placed his face on his gloves as the trainer came out to check him out, but ended up staying in the game.
Edwards was charged with a slow error, and in addition to causing pain to Melvis for his misdirection, it ran to the Marlins. There were two outs for two bases when the ball hit, and an error from Edwards led Seth Brown to score, giving him a 6-0 athletics lead.

Athletics starting pitcher Gunnar Hoglund created him MLB He made his debut when he pitched six innings and gave up one run with six hits, but hit seven batters to win.
Marlins starting pitcher Valente Verozo threw four 2/3 innings, giving up five runs with four hits, walking four batters while hitting one batter.

The Athletics (18-15) will play the Marlins (12-19) again on Saturday at 4:10pm ET in the second game of the three-game series.
