Lee Area, a A long-standing baseball life The person best known for his grand 1983 rant passed away this week at the age of 87.
Area played in 95 major league games and managed 538 Chicago Cubs Philadelphia Phillies. However, it was after one of those games that Elia gave perhaps one of the most legendary rants of all time.
On April 29, 1983, Area was the Cubs skipper, falling 5-14 after losing 4-3 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Wrigley Field crowd of 9,391 threw trash at Keithmoreland and Larry Boer as the Cubs headed for the clubhouse.

Area responded with a charming rant that let out to Cubs fans, including at least 40 F bombs.
“Fans of fans who say you’re a Cub fan who’s supposed to rip all the fs out there,” the area began. “I say one thing to you – I hope we get hotter than s.
That was just the beginning of a more than three minutes of Tillard, who was caught up in the only microphone in the clubhouse that day.
As part of his remarks, he declared that 85% of the world is at work, and “the other 15% have come out here.” At the time, Wrigley Field had no lights, and the Cubs played games at home for just one day.

“‘They’re really, really behind you,” my f— ing a–,” continued the area. “What am I going to do, what am I going to do, get out there and my f—in player is destroyed every day and stay quiet about it?
The Philadelphia native area has a 238-300 record as a major league manager in four seasons, with the Cubs and the Phillies two. He was shortstop during his playing career, hitting .203 with three homers and 25 RBIs in 95 games with the White Sox and Cubs. When the Phillies won the 1980 World Series, he was a 3 base coach.

Area also worked for the Seattle Mariners from 1993-97, 2001-2002, and in 2008 he worked as a hit coach, bench coach and special assistant for field managers.
