
Ministry of Justice Prosecutors from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in the Minneapolis area have launched a civil rights investigation into a new directive to consider race when negotiating a contract with criminal defendants.
Attorney General Pam Bondy, Acting Assistant Attorney General Chad Mizzell and Civil Rights Office aide Hermeet Dillon have told Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriaty whether the Justice Department is engaged in the patterns of practice of the Hennepin County law firm, the deprivation of rights, the constitutional blessing.
The letter dated May 2nd adopted the recently adopted “Negotiation Policy for Cases Including Adult Defendants.” This directed the prosecutors to consider race when formulating the offer of plea, saying “racial identity should be part of the overall analysis,” and that the prosecutors should “identify and address racial disparities at decision points.”
“The investigation will focus in particular on whether HCAOs are involved in illegal consideration of race in prosecutors’ decisions,” they said in a letter Dillon shared with X.

Bondi, Mizelle and Dhillon said their investigation would include “a comprehensive review of all relevant HCAO policies and practices that could involve illegal consideration of race in prosecutors’ decisions.”
Dhillon also approved a full investigation to determine whether HCAOs are engaged in patterns or practices that deprive rights, privileges or exempt immunity. Protected by the Constitution Or US law. ”
“Please ensure that we have not reached a conclusion on the subject of the investigation,” their letter to Moriarty said. “We welcome your assistance in reviewing all relevant information and identifying what it is. We appreciate your cooperation in our investigation. The letter said the Civil Rights Division special litigation section will oversee the investigation and contact Moriarty.

Moriarty was elected amid the wave of progressive district attorneys who took office after the subsequent protests and riots of black lives in Minneapolis. She is Supported by the group It is tied to money from mega-donor George Soros, one of the most prominent supporters of progressive issues in the United States.
Moriarty, the former chief public defender of the county, became Hennepin County Attorney in January 2023 after committing to take police responsibility in the community where Floyd was killed.

Moriarty’s two direct predecessors have been in office for 31 years, and her promise of dramatic change was supported by the state’s Democrats and community leaders. But since then, Moriarty has faced a fierce backlash, even among some former supporters. This is because critics have sometimes sought mild sentences for violent crimes and questioned the decision to divert more people to programs rather than prisons.
Police officers, local officials and several progressive activists have accused Moriarty of the White State Police officer last summer of murdering a black man. Reverse the course and drop the fee. Leaders of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association have launched a well-known campaign urging state governor and former Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Waltz to reassign prosecutors from Moriarty.
