The world of sports was stunned as the family of “Sports Science” host John Brenkas on Sunday nights. During ESPN The segment announced his death on social media.
Brenkas was 54.

A statement posted on his social media page said Brenkas “lost his fight.” With depression End of the month.
“It’s a deep sadness to share the news that John Brenkas has passed away,” the statement read. “The co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.TV and six-time Emmy Award-winning co-creator and host of “Sports Science” was battling depression.
“John lost his fight from this terrible illness on May 31, 2025. His heartbreaking family and friends are now encouraging people struggling with depression to seek help.”

Brenkas’ death resonated throughout social media.
Brenkas was open about his fight against his mental health issues. he I talked to the former NFL star Marcellus Wiley about his downward spiral after selling “Sports Science” to ESPN.
The “Sports Science” segment was a huge hit at ESPN’s “Sports Center” in the late 2000s and mid-2010s. This segment showed the impact on the athlete’s body from huge hits in the game and other instances.
