The unofficial vote totals show that State Sen. John Horn leads two terms of mayor Chokwe Antal Lumumba from 18,493 to 6,246, according to the city’s office. Absentee votes have not yet been counted, but Horhn declared victory in the race.
Lumumba, Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens II and Jackson City Councilman Aaron Banks face allegations of federal programs bribery, honest service fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, announced by the Department of Justice, announced last November. All three pleaded not guilty.

Lumumba and Horhn faced a democratic mayoral primary once in 2017. In that race, Lumumba beat Horhn completely, earning 55% of the vote.
The winner of this race will advance to June 3rd General election.
“People are prepared for something different,” Horn said recently. “They are ready for change. They are ready for leadership. They are ready for better roads. They are ready for less crime. They are ready for more opportunities.”
Lumumba, son of the New African Republic, denied accepting bribes last year, releasing a video statement last year that “rejected “political prosecution” and accused with the aim of destroying it.” [his] . . . reputation. ”

“There is no coincidence and the timing is just before the upcoming mayoral race. My legal team will be bold enough to defend me against these accusations. Again, while I am disappointed, I am not stopped.
According to Clarion Leisure, local Mississippi, the three officials were in a luggage room on a yacht in Broward County, Florida.
One undercover investigator reportedly asked authorities to advance the deadline for “SOQ” or qualification statements required for planned hotel development, and Lumumba reportedly went forward and called.

Another agent handed the mayor five checks worth a total of $50,000. The paper reportedly left the funds in the mayor’s campaign account after returning to Mississippi.
