Maryland itself has a diverse history when it comes to slavery, civil war and treatment of African Americans.
The state will host the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, connecting the East Coast with key towns and grounds in Delaware. There, her family and group of people supported a runaway slave on their way to relative safety in the north.
