Archaeologists in Ohio are unearthing a piece of early American history hidden beneath the charred floorboards of a historic tavern.
This excavation is part of the site’s restoration efforts. overfield tavern It is located in Troy, about 32 miles north of Dayton.
For the past few weeks, excavators from Ohio Valley Archeology have been digging beneath the museum, the city’s oldest building.
The building was built in 1808 and served as a courthouse until 1811, when it was converted into a tavern. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.

The artifacts included an 1817 coin and an 1846 coin found under the floorboards of the tavern.

Manning said excavators found evidence that a small log building attached to the back of the tavern was built later than previously thought.

Manning said the plan is to fully restore the tavern by 2027, when the museum reopens to the public.
“Selected artifacts will be put on display once the museum is restored,” he said.
