The WNBA announced on Monday Expand to 18 teams By the end of 2030, the franchise had headed to Philadelphia, Detroit and Cincinnati.
It’s continuous growth for the league. Golden State Valkyriethat 13th team will play in their first season. Toronto and Portland are expected to sign a team next season.
Despite more opportunities, one WNBA star is not exactly excited by the move.

This marks the second time the WNBA is in Detroit. Shock won three WNBA titles before moving to Tulsa in 2010. They then moved to Dallas and became wings.
Cleveland will begin the season, assuming that in 2028, Detroit and Philadelphia in 2029 have NBA and WNBA committee approvals.
“The demand for women’s basketball is more than ever, and we are excited to welcome Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia to the WNBA family,” said WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert. “This historic expansion strongly reflects the extraordinary momentum of our league, the depth of talent throughout the game, and the burgeoning demand for women’s investment in professional basketball.”
Other cities to submit expansion bids were St. Louis, Austin, Denver, Charlotte and Houston.

“There are obviously a variety of cities to bid, and one of the cities I wanted to scream for is Houston because they have such a strong history in this league and their amazing ownership group,” Engelbert said. “The Houston Comet was amazing, the first four first championships in the WNBA, so obviously, I think we’re looking.
