The high-tech billionaire leading both SpaceX and Tesla was hired as “special government officials,” a role created by Congress in 1962 that allowed legislative departments to hire temporary employees for certain short-term initiatives.

Doge is a cross-sectional organization established to slim and streamline the federal government. According to Trump’s executive order, the group itself will be disbanded on July 4, 2026.
Musk and Trump have previously previewed the role of masks to be temporary and will end in the coming weeks.

“Technically, you’re a special government employee and you should be 130 days,” Fox News’ Brett Baier asked Musk in an exclusive interview with Doge leaders in March. “Are you going to go on past that or do you think it’s something you’re trying to do?”
“I think we’ve accomplished most of the work that was needed to reduce the deficit by $1 trillion in that time,” Musk replied.
Trump also told the media in March that he would maintain Musk, saying, “I can protect him as much as I can,” but he told the media, “he has a big company to run.”
