“After evaluating the first year of the 12-team playoffs, the CFP Management Committee felt that making this adjustment was the game’s greatest benefit,” CFP Executive Director Rich Clark said in a statement. “The change will ensure that teams have access to the playoffs by rewarding teams with winning conference championships, but it will also allow them to build a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performance on the field throughout the regular season.”
If the new format was posted last year, Oregon, Georgia, Texas and Pennsylvania would have all had a few goodbye weeks. Instead, Texas and Pennsylvania both had to play in the first round, winning with convincingness. The Longhorns beat No. 12 Clemson (15th in the country) 38-24, then beat No. 4 seed Arizona.

ASU played Ohio State in a matchup between No. 11 and No. 6 seed, but Boise State would face Indiana in the battle between No. 8 and No. 9 seed if the straight seeds last season were used.
Instead, Mountain West winner Boise had goodbye as the third-place seed in the quarterfinals, but was the sixth-place seed in the Fiesta Bowl in Pennsilda and ranked third in the country. The Nittany Lions defeated No. 11 SMU 38-10 in the first round.
All four conference champions lost in the quarter-finals.
No. 8 Ohio Despite playing in the first round, he destroyed every team on his way to the national title. However, the Buckeyes did not make many favors themselves in sowing their own seeds. They lost at home to Michigan to end the regular season. However, they were ranked sixth by the committee despite being a seed number 8.
