Carol Alto first came to the idea of modeling a G-string in a sports-illustrated swimsuit.
“There was a moment [SI Swimsuit editor] Jules [Campbell] Alt pulled out the G-String. “I told Fox News Digital, “I saw that G-string. There’s no way. My dad will kill me.”
“And she didn’t push me against me. Jules didn’t let anyone do anything they were uncomfortable with,” the supermodel shared. “She brought out a few other swimsuits that I had given in a little more that I felt more comfortable.”

It was another cover girl who convinced Pinup to peel off for the magazine.
“The magazine came out and I saw Ms Christie Brinkly wears that g-string [during] The sunset sitting on the beach, “The stars reminded me of it.” And it was a very spectacular picture… the credits are due. Christie looked so beautiful in that swimsuit. And the art, it was so artistic… I was like, “What am I doing? I should celebrate the female body.” And it changed my mind about a lot of things in my business. ”

Alt, 64 is one of the many supermodels who spoke out With a new documentary, “Beyond the Eyes: The Issues of Jules Campbell’s Swimsuits.” Directed by Campbell’s stepdaughter, Jill Campbell, the founding editor of SI swimsuits explores how they transformed a struggling magazine into a media empire, discovering some of the most influential supermodels in the fashion industry.

Campbell passed away in 2022 at the age of 96. Alto, the daughter of the fire chief, said it was the nonsense Campbell who urged her to strip and heat things up.

“I’ve brought this much of a frilled white shirt,” Alto said. “[SI Swimsuit] It gave me a little more spice in my career. But that’s because I saw how beautiful it was. She never pushed me. Jules never pushed me. I think I honestly started pushing her. ”
Alt made her SI swimsuit debut in Florida in 1981. The outlet reported. She landed the cover a year later after a photo shoot with John G. Zimmerman of Kenya.

“I was so scared I could die to meet Jules,” Alto admitted. “My agency wanted to do sports illustrations for me. They sent me to meet Jules Campbell, and in her office, there are all these pictures and all of these covers… she saw me.
Still, Campbell saw something in Alt The “face” of the fashion industry.

“[Jule] “I’m going to take you to film in Alaska,” he said. I have never been to Alaska. ” That’s how I met Jules… At first I thought I looked like Christie Brinkley. And in the end I ended up looking like me and she ended up using me. And since I got my cover in my second year, it was pretty fast. And it’s all thanks to Joules. She defended me. ”

Campbell joined the magazine during the dawn of the Twiggy era, New York Times It has been reported. The outlet said Campbell’s first cover featured 18-year-old Soo Peterson in late January 1965, featuring nude body stockings and a white fishnet jumpsuit. Central America: “Blown the gasket away.”

“It’s really interesting that she’ll receive death threats and criticism from the 2025 lens,” Jill told Fox News Digital. “I didn’t like seeing women in swimsuits in sports magazines, and they’d call it a male sports magazine. But in the meantime there were a lot of women who enjoyed this magazine. For a bathing suit. Even today, people comment on the gorgeous bathing suits and photos. ”

“She didn’t feel like she was doing something wrong, so she dealt with it,” Jill shared. “She didn’t feel that she was objectifying women. She was creating art. She was creating fashion. Every other magazine had women on the market. There was a beauty pageant.

“When she got this criticism, we could see it in a few interviews,” Jill continued. “She was tired of it so I always did this eye roll. She was a working woman. She wanted to do her job.
Alt said Campbell only works with trusted photographers and she is fiercely protecting the muse.

“One of the things that Jules did to protect the girls was to step into the photographer and pretend they were adjusting something, styling something, moving their swimsuit,” Alt said.

“She jumps right away…and it wasn’t really about editing something or styling something, because something was a bit of a risk or swimsuit moving. She went there and protected us.
Addressing “inappropriate behavior” was not heterogeneous to many models. But at Campbell, things were different, Alt emphasized. In the SI swimsuit set, the models were treated with respect and the photographer was a “gentleman.”

“It was everywhere,” she said of the challenges that models endured outside the SI swimsuit.
“The person you deserved, someone tried to hold you tight, or you were filming and trying to break into your room. Something inappropriate was always going on. But I always felt that it was a way to get out of the situations where you dealt with it and made it a horrible situation or anecdote from your life.”

“It was an anecdote in my life many times, but I was always able to manipulate myself, so I never got there until it was a horrifying situation…everyone handled it in the way they knew best.”
“But Jules… she protected girls, protected jobs and gave them a beautiful magazine that became a complete brand,” Alt said. “It’s a great gift. She had that gift.”

Alt has zero regrets about modeling the magazine’s G-strings. She said her appearance drove her into stardom and led her to a successful career as an author and entrepreneur. At age 62, she walked the SI swimsuit runway show at Miami Swim Week.

“There were people who came up to me and asked if I was Carol Alto, not whether I was the girl on the cover of the magazine,” Alt said. “[SI Swimsuit] It was one of the building blocks of my career. And I’m still here in 47 years. ”
“Beyond the Gaze: Jule Campbell’s Swimsuit Issue” will be screened at the IFC Center in New York City on June 26th.
