St. Louis Cardinals Starting pitcher Sony Gray became one of the most dominant pitching performances of the season, 5-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field on Friday.
The 35-year-old Gray completed the “Madux” and scored one hit while pitching nine innings of shutout balls, hitting 11 batters with just 89 pitches.
Gray’s performance comes when the pitcher first pitched a complete game shutout of under 90 pitches since 2021. New York Yankees Ace Max Freed was the last pitcher to do it when he closed the Baltimore Orioles as a member of the Atlanta Braves.

“I did that early in my career, but it’s been a while,” Gray said after the game. “I don’t know if you can do it, especially the type of game, especially if you can go with me.

Gray didn’t pitch more than 12 pitches in the innings and had two innings under eight. Gray has been under attack throughout the game, with 19 first pitch strikes on the 28 batters he faced.

“I knew the innings were moving a bit. I knew it was perfect for that long. When the guy hit, I pitched well there, so I was fine with that,” Gray said. “When I went out ninth, it felt like just another inning, which was good.”
The Cardinals (45-38) are aiming to build a performance for Gray as they take on Guardian (40-40) in the second game of the three-game series on Saturday at 4:10pm ET.
