California Attorney General Rob Bonta On Thursday, they released a legal opinion that shows that the state’s daily online fantasy sports platform is illegal.
Bonta’s Opinions on page 33 The fantasy sports platform says it is illegal as it involves betting on sports. At first glance, this applies only to everyday fantasy sports, but not to an in-season fantasy sports league.

“Like traditional sports betting, daily fantasy sports games allow participants to earn or lose money based on the outcome of a sporting event played by third-party athletes,” the opinion states.
“Just because the operators are not betting on players doesn’t mean that players are not betting on each other.”

Sports gambling is illegal In Californiahowever, fantasy sports are legal gray areas. However, the online fantasy sports platform has been operating within the state for more than 12 years, and its products have generated billions of dollars in the meantime.
In the 2022 state election, voters overwhelmingly refused measures to legalize online sports betting. Then, in 2023, California GOP State Assemblyman Scott Wilk wrote to the state Department of Justice, demanding legal opinions on daily fantasy sports.
