Tensions flare up during Saturday NCAA Baseball A game between Samford and Mercer.
Samford’s outfielder Michael Gupton hit a two-run homer to increase the Bulldogs’ lead over the Mercer Bears. Gupton seemed to scream something at Mercer’s player while he was doing a lively jogging around the bass.

Gupton’s words appeared to target at least one player in the baseball diamond and Mercer dugout. Gupton eventually touched on the home plate and celebrated with Samford’s teammate.
Visibly annoyed Mercer’s shortstop, Bradley Frye, tried to chase after Gupton and had to hold him back by the referee. Mercer’s coach also expressed his frustration with the referee.

Mercer players then began to leave the arena in obvious protests.
Several Mercer players had to be restrained in the dugout.

Southern Conference Commissioner Michael Cross was seen attending the game and ultimately speaking with the referee.
Gupton and Fry were kicked out of the game after a video review. The coach was also abandoned, with Samford’s assistant Gill Walks and Mercer pitching coach Tanner Gordon receiving the discharge.
