Amazon will shut down all services Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh The company announced Tuesday that it will increase its focus on Whole Foods Market.
Amazon said it plans to convert some stores to Whole Foods Market stores. The company currently operates 57 Amazon Fresh and 15 Amazon Go stores, according to the Associated Press.
“While we have seen some bright spots with Amazon-branded physical grocery stores, we have yet to create a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed to scale at scale,” the company said in a blog post.
Fresh and Go’s last day of operation is February 1st.

“We are also increasing our investment in physical stores that are resonating with our customers. Whole Foods Market, a pioneer and leader in natural and organic foods, has experienced great success since our acquisition in 2017, increasing sales by more than 40% and expanding to more than 550 stores,” the company said.
“More customers are choosing Whole Foods Market for both everyday shopping and special occasions, as evidenced by record foot traffic and year-over-year same-store growth that outpaces the industry. To accelerate this growth, we are currently planning investments to open more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years.”

The company said it “plans to introduce new store concepts” over the next few years, including “a new supercenter brick-and-mortar retail concept” that includes “fresh groceries, household goods and general merchandise.”
This shift in focus comes days after reports that Amazon plans to cut thousands of jobs as part of a broader effort to cut nearly 10% of its internal workforce.
