Progressive Champion Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Within New York, the city’s democratic mayoral race is heavily weighing on New York City, with long expected support expected within three weeks of the June 24th primary.
Ocasio-Cortez, four-term council member representing the Bronx and Queens council districts New York City The most prominent leader on the left, supported State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani for the mayor on Thursday.
“Assembly member Mamdani has demonstrated his true ability on-site to bring together a coalition of the strongest working-class New Yorkers to lead the pack,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement to the New York Times. “In the final stretch of the race, you need to be very realistic about that.”

With multiple progressive candidates in the primary race, Ocasio-Cortez’s support for Mamdani is seen as a move to consolidate fractured progressive voters into a single candidate to prevent the more moderate Cuomo from removing power.

Ocasio Cortez, now 35, made history in 2018 with the defeat of longtime House Democrats, then attracted the public attention in the years that followed as the least noticeable member of a small, growing group of young, diverse and progressive home members known as the “Squad.”

He predicted, “On June 24th, with @AOC’s support and this move behind us, we will do the same.”
Mamdani says she hopes to get free rides on city buses and freeze rent in apartments and city-run grocery stores. He paid for his platform by implementing a $10 billion tax hike on businesses and the ultra-rich people.

As his poll numbers plummeted, Adams announced in early April that he would run for reelection as an independent candidate, rather than seeking a Democrat nomination.
Ocasio-Cortez’s support took place nine days before the early voting at the primary kickoff on June 14th, hosting the first morning after the two Democratic mayors’ major debates.

Mamdani and many of his rivals for the nominations were targeted at Cuomo in volatile debate on Wednesday night.

Cuomo was pushed back by the Mamdani, characterising him as too far to the left and inexperienced.
Cuomo, a former three-term governor who resigned in 2021 amid multiple scandals, is hoping to political redemption, working to stop his campaign comeback.
