1,600 years old Byzantine era The Christian Monastery mosaic was recently released for the first time, giving us a glimpse into ancient life.
Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement earlier this week regarding the announcement of the be’er shema mosaic. The mosaic was officially open to the public on Sunday at the Melhabim Regional Council complex in the southern part of Israel.
The ministry described the artwork as “one of the most impressive mosaics discovered in the South.”

“A colorful mosaic from about 1,600 years ago presents 55 medallions decorated with Hunting scenescenes of animals and daily life,” the statement also stated.
The mosaic features 55 medallions, each telling their own story. Archaeologist Shaik Lender said the scene depicts “mythical characters, baskets of fruits, exotic animals, scenes of everyday life, hunting scenes, and more.”

“The mosaics were clearly made by the hands of real artists,” the lender added.
“It consists of small mosaic stones in a variety of colours, combined with glass and ceramics, infusing it with variety.”

According to Israeli officials, the mosaic is a feature within the monastery and has doubled as a winery that “acquires its nutrition.”

“The excavation of the complex has revealed a large wine press and warehouse with storage jugs produced on the site,” the statement said.

The monastery was built nearby Ancient Spice Trail Road It linked the historic city of Elsa to the port of Gaza.
“The ancient roads where this settlement was set up seem to serve as a kind of desert and habitat boundary during Byzantine times, and perhaps even earlier in Roman times,” the official said.

Archaeologists also discovered that the monastery is part of a large settlement consisting of hundreds of Dunhams. Dunham, a historic unit of measurement still in use in Israel today, is 1,000 square meters each.
The mosaics were extensively preserved by archaeologists.

The mosaics have been extensively preserved by archaeologists over the past few months.
They treated the mosaic for damage and re-strengthened the tiles. Eli Escosid, director of the Israeli Ancient Bureau (IAA), praised the opening of the mosaic, saying the site “serves the public as a publicly publicly archaeological garden.”

“I now invite the public to enjoy and shape my impression. Most beautiful mosaic I’ve seen it here in southern Israel, here in Negev, in northwest,” he said.
