Washington Capitals It entered damage control on Thursday after reports that an email had been sent to season ticket holders informed them that the 2025-2026 NHL season will be the last of hockey’s Great Alex Ovechkin.
On Thursday afternoon, reports began to spread on social media that Ovechkin, who turned 40 in September, would prepare for his final season in the league.

According to reports from thehockeywriters.comon Thursday, an email was sent with the message “October – Capitals Hockey and Alex Ovechkin’s final NHL season commenced.”

Shortly after the report began to spread, the Capitals Public Relations team issued a statement clarifying that a “decision” about Ovechkin’s future had been made and that the email had been sent incorrectly.
“No decisions have been made regarding the future of Alex Ovechkin from 2025 to 2026 NHL season. An email was sent from an individual in the corporate sales department who mistakenly implied that it was Alex Ovechkin’s final year. ”
Questions about Ovechkin’s future followed the record of achieving his career goals. He enters the next season in the final year of his contract.

After the Capitals were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Carolina Hurricanes, the Russian hockey star confirmed he will at least make his 21st season in the NHL back in the fall.
“I’m going to take those few months (offseason) off, enjoy my life and then go back to work,” he said. “Me and (trainer Pavel Burlachenko) will do our job, prepare us for the season and do our best.”

Despite his broken leg last season, Ovechkin scored 44 goals and returned to break Gretzky’s record.
“I look forward to next year as well,” he added. “I’m going to try my best to play, and my team will help me too. I’d like to come back next year and see a team that can win the Stanley Cup.”
