The Croatian earthquake led to a series of events that helped archaeologists recently discover the theatres of ancient Romans, officials say.
Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media announced in an April press release that it had been discovered in Sisak city.
The Roman theatre, also known as Odeon, was discovered during a renovation of Sissac’s City Hall.

The theatre orchestra was found in the building’s basement.
The Discovery photo shows fragments of an ancient building visible under the glass floor. The stone also appears to take the semicircular shape of an orchestra.

The Ministry described the structure as apsidal. That is, it resembles a semicircular or polygonal recess made up of “three parallel rows of inner diameter 20 meters.”
“In the later period, a monumental building with buttresses was built on top of this structure, and additional research is required in the courtyard of the City Hall for interpretation,” the statement, translated from Croatian to English, states.

The town hall was built in 1914, Croatia’s 2020 earthquake – And the renovation of the building led archaeologists to a Roman orchestra.
“The renovation restored the original coloring, the design of the main entrance carpenter and the original appearance of the main gable,” the statement added.

“All the preserved decorative elements have been restored and the original pavement was presented in front of the entrance to the city hall itself.”
Authorities praised the discovery, calling it an “exceptionally valuable discovery.”
