River cats look like throwbacks to the California gold rush. The city of Sacramento was a haven for gold miners in the late 1840s, and became a thriving community in 1850, and was incorporated into California.
“Inspired by the regional history of California’s Gold Rush, this new identity provides a connection to the important impact of this era when Sacramento grew as the closest major city to Goldfield,” the team said in a news release Thursday. Sacramento Bee.
The team released a video introducing the team’s name, but was also leaning against the old trope as two women were shown with dollar signs in their eyes when they saw the player.
The video, which was then removed from the team’s social media page, sparked some outrage, and the organization reversed its name decision.

“The recent marketing campaign for alternative identities clearly missed the mark,” the team said in a statement. “Our intention was to creatively refer to the rich history of the country of Sacramento and Gold, but our approach was wrong. Sorry for the mistake. We no longer use this identity.”
