Trump recognized all attendees, including the former Buckeyes head coach and the current lieutenant colonel. Ohio Jim Tressel and other Ohio representatives.
Before calling out specific admiration to Ryan Day’s head coach and some of his players, Trump made sure to mention the history that came with the National Championship trophy, which he sat on a table next to the Buckeyes helmet and jersey while he gave his speech.
“This was a historic year of college football,” Trump said. “Stay together today, these men are the first college football players in history and can proudly call them the 12-team playoff champions. That’s not easy. You’re the first.”
For the Buckeyes, that certainly wasn’t easy, especially after suffering some tough losses during the regular season that Trump raised. They fell to Oregon, a college football playoff team, and Michigan, a team they were expected to beat in their home turf, but they couldn’t get an offense.
“I shouldn’t say this. I actually said, ‘Should I leave this line?” And they said, ‘Sir, they want to hear everything,’ Trump said. “Bad and good things? But a lot of people counted you after the defeat against Oregon. Oregon is a great team, and it’s a team to the north — we won’t talk about it. But you refused to defeat the Buckeyes.
