In “Craman Countdown,” Jay Jacobs, head of BlackRock’s U.S. equity ETFs, explains why more investors should become active investors and analyzes mid-market performance as stocks decline as December begins.
The exchange-traded fund industry is having a record year, with assets already exceeding $1 trillion, with active managers driving a large portion of that growth.
Through the third quarter, Dan Aronson, managing director of the ETF Client Product Specialist Group, wrote in Janus Henderson’s ETF Pulse: “Activity in the third quarter confirmed what we have been building over the past several years. Active ETFs continue to drive innovation and flow.”

He noted that active ETFs account for 80% of the year-to-date creation, with assets under management increasing 38% compared to 6% for passive ETFs. New product launches are balanced between bonds and stocks.

However, not all funds are created equal. The average AUM for funds that are two to three years old is about $120 million, compared to just $40 million for newer funds.

Goldman Sachs talks about small-cap stocks
“We’re optimistic, but people need to be nimble,” Jay Jacobs, head of BlackRock’s U.S. stock ETF, told FOX Business’ Liz Claman. “I think this is where active management can provide a ton of value to help you ride out a phase where the market is going up, but at the same time there’s a lot of dispersion between stocks.” “There will be bigger winners and there will be bigger losers. Being able to play the stock market the right way will really help increase returns for investors in 2026.”
