Meta announced Friday that parents will soon be able to disable private chats between their teens and AI characters. This is Meta’s latest safety measure. social media platform Following criticism of frivolous chatbots.
The company says parents can block specific AI characters and view a wide range of topics their teens discuss using chatbots and Meta’s AI assistants without completely turning off access to AI.
Even if parents disable one-on-one chat with AI characters, the AI assistant will still be available with age-appropriate defaults.
“Technology will never replace the value of critical thinking, real-life connections, and human relationships, and that is not our purpose,” Mehta said in the announcement. “We believe that AI, with appropriate age-appropriate guardrails, can complement traditional learning methods and exploration in a way that feels collaborative.”

Friday’s announcement follows Meta’s statement earlier this week that the AI experience for teenagers will be guided by the PG-13 movie rating system, as part of an effort to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content.
The company said the new monitoring features build on existing safety measures for teen accounts, such as keeping conversations age-appropriate.

“We know that teenagers may try to circumvent these protections, so we are also using AI technology to target people suspected of being teenagers to these protections, even if they tell us they are an adult,” Mehta said.

A report issued in September found that some of Instagram’s safety features were not working effectively. Meta’s chatbots have also been observed engaging in “romantic or sensual conversations,” according to the report, prompting further criticism from parents and child safety advocates.
