The unique sun hat, worn by Roman soldiers in Egypt, was recently unveiled for the first time. Its survival is considered miraculous.
The sun hat is currently on display Bolton Museum In Great Manchester, England. It was discovered in 1888 at the Ilyahun Archaeological Site in Fayum, Egypt.
The accessories were donated to Bolton’s first museum, the Chadwick Museum, and have been in storage for nearly 115 years up until now.
Ian Trumbull, curator of archaeology at Bolton Library & Museum Services, told Fox News Digital that he survived thanks to Egypt’s arid conditions.
“In Egypt, textiles are well preserved in areas where the ground remains dry but cannot survive in wet areas. Near the Nile River Or in lowlands and valley areas where flooding is prone, such as the Valley of Kings,” he said.

“The hat was excavated from arid areas of the city, but the survival of this piece is still very noteworthy as Fayyum is generally a wet area.”
The hat is thought to be from 2, 100 to 2, 400 years old, and is either Greek or Roman Egyptian history.
“The outside of the hat is made of cream wool, but the inside is dyed redhead.”
“Our current theory is that when they moved from Romans and Anatolia to Egypt, it was worn by soldiers who would have been able to adapt it to the Egyptian situation,” Trumble said.
