Nuclear is seeing a renaissance due to the need for cleaner energy and increased electricity demand as the use of artificial intelligence is increasing. And now, it could also play a role in treating cancer.
The former headquarters of the Manhattan Project, where the world’s first atomic bomb was created, is now turning nuclear waste into a potential treatment for cancer.
This study is being conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Atomic Power Atkinsrealis Isotek, a contractor in the company’s Terrapower and Energy division, has developed a process that extracts key elements from nuclear materials for promising cancer treatments called targeted alpha therapy.
“Isotek has adopted the government’s supply of uranium-233 and is finally processing it for disposal,” an Isotek spokesperson told Fox Business. “But in the process, we’re extracting thorium-229.”
