If it’s the president’s responsibility Donald TrumpWashington’s soccer team wouldn’t have changed its name.
The NFL team is currently Washington Commanderbut the old-named Redskins is what Trump says kept it as if he owned the organization.
“Well, do you want me to make a controversial statement? I will,” Trump told a reporter in Morristown, New Jersey on Sunday. “I wouldn’t have changed the name. But it’s them. It doesn’t have the same ring for me.”

Commander Owner Josh Harris told Brett Baier “Special Report” In April, it will not return the Redskins’ name despite plans to return the team to Washington, D.C. on the old RFK Stadium site.
“The commander’s name actually carries an incredible kind of element in our building,” Harris said. “So, a certain kind of player who is tough, football-loving, delegated commander and Jaden. [Daniels]for example, commanders, they are ranked.
“And as you know, the business staff got in. Obviously, we’re in a military city here. There are more military personnel than anywhere else, so we’re moving forward with the commander’s name and getting excited about it and not looking back.”

He may not have changed his name, but Trump believes that winning teams will stick to their fans no matter what. That’s exactly what Washington did last season, reaching the NFC Championship Game for the first time in nearly 30 years under new quarterback Jaden Daniels.
“But you know, winning can make everything better,” Trump continued. “So if they’re winning, everything about the sudden commander sounds good. But I wouldn’t have changed my name.”
As for the new stadium, political discrepancies surround the $3.8 billion project. Less than two months after completing the stadium deal, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said there was a delay in DC Council accepting the latest budget. Front Office Sports.
“If the council removes terms of transaction or budget dollars from the budget, it kills our contract with the commander,” Bowser said last month on July 15 in preliminary approval of plans that require a contract.
Before the comment in his name, Trump was asked by a reporter about potential intervention in whether the deal remains volatile.

“Well, we see what happens,” he replied. “I’ve seen these deals and I don’t blame them. It’s a very important asset. It’s a great asset. So if we can help them, I will.
“In the end, we’ll control it [land]. The federal government is ultimately controlling it, so we see what happens. I saw the plan, I saw the stadium. The owner is a very, very successful and very good man. I know him a bit. It’s great that the NFL is there. I can tell you that. If they want to negotiate a bit harshly, that’s fine for me. ”
The reason behind Washington’s name was converted to commander stems from widespread criticism of Native Americans that the Redskins are offensive.
The team abandoned the name in the wake of George Floyd’s protests and called it the “Washington Football Team” until 2022 when a major rebranding into commander came.
There are large contingents who believe that the name and logo should return to the historic franchise, including Sen. Steve Daines of R-Mont.
“The irony is that Native American culture was cancelled when the Day movement was so advanced,” Daines said in November 2024.

“We have a good discussion with the NFL and the commander. We are sincerely in negotiations that will allow us to use this logo again. Probably, we go to a foundation that can help Native Americans in sports. We made a decision yesterday on the committee to support this bill.”
Harris told Baier that construction will begin at the site in 2027, with the first day hopeful to reach its 2030 goals.
