Before he passed away, he was a Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist and founding member Gary Rossington He told fellow band members Johnny Van Zandt and Ricky Medrock that he wanted to continue with the band even after he was gone.
“He knew his health was getting worse, he told me, he said… “I spent my life continuing this legacy and I don’t want to see this. band Van Zandt told Fox News Digital.
He continued, “So we brought Damon Johnson to play the guitar and Gary coached him. So we’re doing as much as we can.”
Van Zandt explained that Rossington was off the road as his health began to decline, like in November 2022 at the Lyman Auditorium in Nashville.

He said Rossington would become commonplace. “He went in and played some songs as he felt bad, and he knew he was in poor health. ”
On Friday, in honor of Rossington, the band released the record “Celebrating 50 Years – Live at the Lieman.” This turned out to be his last show.
“This was never supposed to be a live release,” Van Zandt said. “It was done for PBS. And after Gary passed away, what did you know? We think every fan needs to have this in the collection… and what they loved about the band. And Gary loves the fans and knows he’s probably going.
Medlocke said that Rossington thought the recording was “very proud.”
“He knew he was in poor health and he was telling me, he said… “I spent my life continuing with this legacy.
“It was a great night,” he said. “The band was on top of it, so he gave a thumbs up and said, ‘Yeah, I love it, guy. We did great things there.” That was really special to us, right? ”
Van Zandt said the band felt more comfortable that night than a typical recording session.

“It was a night – you know, you know, when you’re recording things, you know, you know, you’re a bit tight, everything,” he explained. It was like, “OK, let’s play the show like any other show.” So the difference was that it was there.
Van Zandt said he wasn’t surprised. lynyrd skynyd He was a fan before joining the company in 1987, so he is still popular with the younger generations. The band was originally formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964 and included brothers Rossington and Van Zandt, Ronnie Van Zandt, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns.

“I love music and didn’t think I would be a part of it. I never wanted to be a part of it,” he said.

He said he was asked to join the band in 1987. “And Ronnie was an alpha dog and was in her father’s appearance. [of the band]I really couldn’t refuse it, and you know, warmed my heart, and it still “today”.

Ronnie van Zandt was Killed in a crash on an airplane In October 1977, the band’s charter flight bound to Louisiana ran out of fuel. Five people were also killed in the crash, including band member Steve Gaines. Rossington was injured in a crash.
Van Zandt and Medlock said they wanted to work hard to honor the other members who are no longer around them.
