Lee Greenwood He recalls why he believes his patriotic anthem is “God blesses America.” I’ve endured the test of time.
The 82-year-old country singer released “God Fluss the Usa,” also known as “Popular Americans.” Since then, the song’s hit status has endured, and its popularity has skyrocketed in both national unity and tragedy.
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Greenwood shared his thoughts on the legacy of “God Flosk the Usa” and why it resonates with “generation to generation.”
“I can’t tell you how many kids I’m 6 or 7 year olds send me a video or my parents waving a little flag and ‘I’m proud to be American'” their parents send me a video of them going there. That’s where patriotism begins,” he said.

“And I’m pretty sure because of how powerful it is “God blesses America.” “Greenwood continues, and now since his release for over 40 years, “Greenwood continues.” And “Oh, you cannot sing the national anthem” or “I will downplay the flag” – you cannot downplay “God’s blessing.” He talks about pride and patriotism. ”
“So, I think that’s why it survived,” he added. “And so many kids have grown up, they’re in their 20s and 30s, they have kids and they’ve said, ‘Hey, look, this is what I did as a kid. Listen to this song.”
Greenwood began his music career in 1962 and signed with the Nashville division of Nashville MCA Records in 1981. The Grammy Award winner wrote and recorded “God Bless the USA” in 1983.

After “God Bless the USA” was released as a single, it reached number seven on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. The song was more widely recognized when it was featured in a video performed at the 1984 Republican National Convention. President Ronald Reagan And first lady Nancy Reagan was in attendance.
Greenwood later performed songs from the campaign rally where Reagan competed in the second term and the 1988 Republican National Convention.
Since then, Greenwood has given the performance “Blessing the United States with God’s Blessings” during the three presidential inauguration celebrations. The California native performed the song in 1989 on the eve of President George Howe Bush’s inauguration. He also sang “God Bless the USA” at President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great” event. In January, Greenwood performed the song when Trump was sworn in at the Rotunda at the Capitol for the second time.

Trump used Greenwood’s patriotic ballads as intro music in campaign rally and some of his biggest speeches.
The song also regained popularity during times of national conflict and tragedy, including during the Gulf War and its aftermath. Attack on 9/11. “God Bless the USA” was certified as Platinum by the RIAA in 2015.
While talking to Fox News Digital, Greenwood admitted that he couldn’t imagine the impact that “God Bless the Usa” had originally written over the years.
“First of all, I didn’t have the idea that I was going to release it as a single, so that would have been ridiculous,” he said. “I wrote that song while on the bus, and I did it for 300 days a year in the first two or three years I signed with the MCA in Nashville.”
Greenwood continued. “And I was thinking about it for a while, and it was a song I wrote one night, and my producer and I were talking about the album where it was placed.

The country singer recalled that he and his producer traveled to Los Angeles where they performed his album “You got a Good Love Comin’.” Irving Azov, The head of the MCA is then recorded. Greenwood told Fox News Digital that Azoff chose to include “God Bless the Usa” in the album and release the track as a single.

“If he asked me and I answered that question – because my producer and I looked at each other and said, ‘I don’t think I’d make a choice,'” Greenwood recalled. “I would have said, ‘You have a good love comin’, the name of the album. And I invested $25,000 in a London station. [music] video [for ‘You’ve Got a Good Love Comin’]. It’s all about dollars and cents for me at that point. ”
“But he was the one who said, I think he was politically connected, and he just said, “I think it’s a song.” Our country Well,” he remembered Azov. “It was a leap of faith. That is, [the] Radio may not be played because it was not a country. ”
In an interview with Fox News Digital in November 2024, Greenwood shared that he was a drum major in his high school marching band, and learned from a young age to be grateful to his country.
“I think where is that Patriotism begins.” He said. “Thank you for the flag, what it means. And then you learn where the sacrifice came from the US military and how many people who gave life to fly the flag. There’s the question of pride. Every time I hear the song, I have something to do with it.

While talking to Fox News Digital in May 2024, Greenwood revealed what it means to him as a US citizen.
“As I wrote [in ‘God Bless the USA’]I’m proud to be an American,” he said.

Musician When people say, “Well, you know, I’m Italian-American. I’m proud of my heritage.” Or, “I’m African-American. Wait – we’re all Americans.
Greenwood noted that “The Blessing of God The USA” is frequently performed at naturalization ceremonies for new American citizens.
“When they hear my song “God the Use,” they understand what it means to be American,” he said. “That’s what makes sense for me too.”

“I think what you’re doing is you measure us into the other world,” he said. “And I think it’s actually surprising that it lasted this long, and we’ve experienced our own civil war, the revolutionary war, of course, and South Korea, Vietnam, World War I, it’s all the conflicts. World War II. ”
“And now we’re riding a drone war where we’re still standing, with fewer boots on the ground, fewer men killed, and hopefully no war, and we’re here,” he continued.
